I've always taken a journalistic approach to photography. I started working professionally within the context of restaurants and bars and my method was to simply jump into the middle of it all and shoot. I spent a decade of my life actually waiting tables and tending bars, so it felt pretty natural to be in and around the pace of a busy restaurant (if you still say "behind you" at the grocery store you'll understand what I mean). It was easy for me to anticipate how an active restaurant kitchen or a crowded bar lives and breathes—and I think that comes through in the work. I do a lot more studio work now, but I still try to bring that natural feel to everything I do. In the end, I find that a great photograph is not capturing a perfect image, but capturing a perfect moment.
My photos have been published in Bon Appétit, GQ, Gray, Travel+Leisure, New York Magazine, The New York Times, Northwest Palate, CNN, Restaurant Hospitality, Seattle Magazine, Seattle Met, Sunset, Vancouver Magazine, Plate, The Wall Street Journal, others…
